A note from the board:
Judy Ratzan, Board Chair
At The Prologue Society, we believe deeply in the power of books to inform, challenge, inspire, and connect us. Our shared appreciation for nonfiction is at the heart of what brings us together and each season, we have the extraordinary opportunity to hear directly from the authors whose ideas and stories help us better understand our world.
In the following essay, Board Member Don Morrison reflects on the importance of reading both fiction and nonfiction and considers the recent decline in nonfiction book sales in the United States and around the world. While there are likely many factors contributing to this shift, there is also an encouraging development: nonfiction audiobook sales are on the rise. People are still “reading,” just in new and evolving ways.
Here at The Prologue Society, we are fortunate to have a community of individuals who remain curious, engaged, and committed to nonfiction. And even better, we get to welcome some of today’s most fascinating authors to spend a few hours with us and bring their books, research, and ideas to life.
What could be better?
We hope you enjoy Don’s thoughtful perspective on the changing ways we read and the enduring importance of books.
